FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Tom has had numerous interactions with clients over the years. Some potential clients have trepidation when they first interface with the lawyer. They should be relaxed, and their potential lawyer should put them at ease.

One way to be more relaxed is to be prepared for the initial meeting. Awareness of what to expect is helpful for preparation. Tom has identified several questions as set forth below that his clients seem to often have upfront, and he provides his responses to them as set forth below:

Q: What Should Be My Lawyer's Primary Responsibility

The lawyer is held to the highest of fiduciary duty. The attorney must look–out for the client’s best interests and be professional and respectful in every way with the client. The lawyer should hold all communication with the client in confidence, and the work performed should be effective and efficient.

Q: How Much Are Legal Fees?

Legal fees will vary on the expertise and time required. Most lawyers charge on an hourly basis ranging from $200-$500 per hour in the Indianapolis area. Tom’s hourly rate is flexible and is at the lower range of that scale. Tom does not require retainers. He also is prepared, in the right situation, to work out a fixed fee arrangement, and, in such case, it is critical that the scope of work expectations are well-defined. Legal fees are expensive and should be discussed with candor at the vary beginning of the
attorney-client relationship.

Q: What Should I Bring to the Initial Meeting with my Lawyer?

The lawyer should advise the potential client as to what should be brought to the meeting. Many papers, such as court records, can be easily computer accessed by the lawyer. Tom will discuss in detail what he would like brought to the meeting.

Q: How Do I Know About the Potential Lawyer's Expertise and Skills

Tom has set forth here a summary of his excellent school and work background. You can check the Indiana Supreme Court roster information that will provide information on disciplinary action against an attorney. Tom has had none. Client references are important sources for evaluation, and there is a reference link on this site. Tom’s references are excellent. Finally, you will have an opportunity to evaluate your potential attorney with your interaction during the initial communications with the
lawyer.
